YOUNGSTOWN

HandsOn Volunteer Network is seeking volunteers to deliver Christmas gifts to about 40 Mahoning County senior citizens who are part of HOVN’s Telephone Reassurance Program.

Gifts can be picked up at the HOVN office at 5500 Market St., Suite 106, and delivered before or on Christmas Day. For more information, call Marlene Braunlich at 330-782-5877.

HOVN said other community volunteering opportunities include First Night Youngstown for its New Year’s Eve event; call 330-744-9966; and becoming a certified tax preparer for low- to moderate-income families, limited-English- speaking taxpayers, people with disabilities and senior citizens in Mahoning County through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Training dates for the 2010 tax-filing season are Saturdays, Jan. 8, 15 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call HOVN for more information.

Playtime for dogs

PETCO is offering indoor playtime for dogs Sundays at its 317 Boardman-Poland Road location.

“Indoor Pooch Playtime” takes place in an enclosed private room and is supervised by a certified dog trainer. Participants are asked to make a donation of $5. Proceeds will benefit Paws Town, a new dog park opening in Boardman in the spring.

Dogs under 25 pounds play from 1 to 2 p.m. Dogs more than 25 pounds play from 2 to 3 p.m.

Restaurant robbed

Nadia’s Restaurant, 322 W. Liberty St., was robbed about 3:30 p.m. Monday by a man dressed in a gray jacket and red baseball hat. No other description was given. Police said employees did not see a weapon.

Powerball winners

Two brothers will get a winning share after having a second-tier prize-winning ticket in the Powerball game. Joseph A. Kurtz of Hubbard and Christopher M. Kurtz of New Castle, Pa., matched five numbers in the Nov. 10 Powerball game winning $200,000.

After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, the Kurtz brothers will share $138,000.

They used auto lotto, purchasing the ticket from Macali Giant Eagle, 2061 Elm Road NE in Warren. The numbers were 5-8-11-40-44. The Power Ball number was 10. Macali Giant Eagle receives a $1,000 bonus.

Holiday display

Carol Perkins of Austintown, a volunteer at Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, has set up an arrangement of old family Bibles in a Christmas display in the lobby of the Rescue Mission, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The display is set among antique sewing machines and wooden furniture with accents of dolls and ornaments.

Perkins does the display for all to enjoy. Tours are available year-round at the Rescue Mission; the public is welcome to see the display.
