The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering free blood-pressure screening to the general public at the following locations: Tuesday, 1 to 2:30 p.m., Struthers Library; Dec. 23, 1 to 4 p.m., Poland Public Library.
Pizza Hut donation
YOUNGSTOWN
Local Pizza Hut restaurants presented a check for $1,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, an amount that represents half of the funds raised during the firm’s Global Hunger campaign. The remaining funds will be used to fight world hunger. The donation will enable the Food Bank to distribute $15,000 worth of food in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Award to Jameson
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Jameson Health System’s Maternity Care Center was awarded the “overall highest rate of compliance with the elective induction bundle for the program year” by Highmark Qualityblue. Jameson Hospital Maternity Care Center voluntarily participated in the program. Highmark commended Jameson Hospital for its creation and implementation of new processes to promote positive clinical outcomes.
Food-bank donation

The Grainger Foundation donated $10,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to support the food bank’s mission to solicit, store and distribute food to hunger-relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties and to provide education and advocacy. The donation, presented after the McDonald Lions Club’s second annual “Feed the Need” 5K Run, was recommended by Jeff Hughes, branch manager of W.W. Grainger Inc., which has been part of the Youngstown business community for 56 years. The Grainger Foundation is an independent, private foundation based in Lake Forest, Ill.

Immunizations provide children and young adults with a critical layer of protection from a range of potentially deadly diseases, and in a new video podcast, Dr. Blaise Congeni, director of Infectious Disease at Akron Children’s Hospital, discusses the vaccines and booster shots for pertussis (whooping cough) and bacterial meningitis. Dr. Congeni said the CDC now recommends a bacterial-meningitis booster shot for 16-year-olds as research shows immunity only lasts about five years. The SJK Charitable Fund, component fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, has awarded Second Harvest Food Bank $5,000. “We thank the Community Foundation for their continued support and for recognizing the increased need through this generous donation.” said Mike Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest, which distributes food to 153 hunger-relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These organizations include church pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
