1791: The Bill of Rights goes into effect following ratification by Virginia.

1890: Sioux Indian Chief Sitting Bull and 11 other tribe members are killed in Grand River, S.D., during a confrontation with Indian police.

1939: The motion picture “Gone With the Wind” has its world premiere in Atlanta.

1944: A single-engine plane carrying bandleader Glenn Miller, a major in the U.S. Army Air Forces, disappears over the English Channel while en route to Paris.

1960: Teflon-coated skillets first go on sale, at Macy’s flagship store in New York City.

1985: Mahoning County commissioners John Palermo, Thomas J. Carney and Leonard Yurcho must decide within four months whether the county’s Department of Human Services should remain downtown. The Youngstown Board of Trade has voted to move the offices out of the central business district.

Boardman High School’s All-Ohio offensive tackle, Jeff Kuczek, is honored as the Mahoning Valley’s most outstanding lineman with the Mack Truck award. Among those attending are two former award winners, Ed Muransky and Bob Maggs.

1970: A suit seeking $1 million is filed in U.S. District Court in Cleveland by Youngstown Atty. Richard McLaughlin on behalf of Bobby Hill, 12, of Ravenna, who lost the sight in one eye when struck by a projectile in a lawn game known as “JARTS.”

The first residents arrive to live at Park Vista, the new Presbyterian home at Broadway and Fifth Avenue on Youngstown’s North Side.

1960: After conferring with President-elect John F. Kennedy, U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan, D-Youngstown, says the nation’s economic problems are worse than in 1933. Kirwan says they didn’t discuss a rumor that he was being considered for appointment to secretary of labor.

1935: Anticipating an increased demand for steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. issues a rush order for repairs to three Brier Hill open hearths.

The Catholic Order of Foresters presents an electric pipeless organ to St. Brendan Church in Youngstown, the first such organ to be installed in the city.
