Campbell school district looks into reviving soccer

CAMPBELL

The school district may be dusting off its soccer equipment and reviving its defunct program.

Schools Superintendent Thomas Robey said the program ended in school year 2005-06 after interest in it waned. But a group of students at the November school board meeting asked the board to look into restarting it, he said.

Tuesday, Robey told the board that 16 boys and 10 girls have indicated they would play. The interest appears to be in the younger grades, he said.

The next steps include determining how many eighth-graders are interested, holding an Athletic Council meeting to discuss soccer and all other sports the district offers, and determining the kinds of sports that projected enrollment numbers could support and the grade level at which the school would participate, he said.

School board President Tony Kelly said the district doesn’t know if it would need more equipment.

Robey said another consideration is state-funding cuts.

Kelly and Robey said the district probably would make a decision by February so it can let its league, the All American Conference League, know as soon as possible.
