Canfield hosts middle school wrestling event

Canfield Village Middle School is hosting the 2010 “Canfield Challenge” middle school wrestling tournament today. The event will feature 11 middle school teams and begins at 10 a.m.

In addition to Canfield, team competing are Boardman Center, Boardman Glenwood, Poland, Alliance, Beaver Local, Girard, Reed (Hubbard), Southeast, South Range and Waterloo.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.

Cards hockey team loses in overtime

The Canfield Cardinals (0-6, 0-2) lost 10-9 in overtime Monday at the Ice Zone to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in GCHSHL Blue South action.

The Cards were led by Riley Emery, who broke Canfield’s all-time scoring record set by Zach Kovacs (2006) in the loss. Emery scored two goals and added three assists. He now has 85 goals and 46 assists for 131 total points, surpassing 128 by Kovacs.

Joe Geiser scored a hat trick for Canfield and added an assist. Nick Carney picked up a goal and an assist. Kyle Basset, Scott Schilling and Bryan Clark each scored a goal, while Ryan Ohara picked up two assists.

Freshman girls fall to Boardman

The Canfield freshman girls basketball team dropped a 42-23 decision to Boardman Monday night.

“Boardman is a good team who challenges us every year,” said coach Kerrie Haurin. “We had some good possessions, but what wins games is consistency. We had difficulty breaking their pressure which cost us quite a few turnovers, but the girls didn’t give up.

Jamie Giambattista led Canfield offensively with seven points. Paige Bidinotto added six for the Cards.

Amateur boxing today

Sam Calderon’s United City Boxing Club will sponsor “Season’s Beatings,” an amateur boxing tournament today at the ITAM on S. Meridian.

There will be at least 16 bouts featuring fighters from all over Ohio and Pennsylvania, with many from the Youngstown area.

General admission tickets are $15, with tables of 10 for $250.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight at 7. Weigh-in is at 5:30.

Canfield’s Laura Beck Queen of Diamonds

Laura Beck, a junior at Canfield High School, has recently been selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North (QDSN) at Kent State University in Kent, Jan. 8 & 9.

The Queen of Diamonds North continues to attract athletes from 30+ states and 2 Canadian provinces.

Beck, a selected participant for the QDSN, mainly plays the catcher position for her travel team, Ohio Ice Gold. She has also been the starting varsity catcher for the Canfield High School softball team for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Athletes are selected based on many criteria ranging from ability, potential, academics, grad year, coaches requests and referrals.

The QDSN is the biggest of the 3 Queen of Diamond events (North, South, East). The events are the largest fast-pitch softball showcases of their kind in the United States.

Holiday Basketball Classic is today

The Youngstown/Warren Holiday Basketball Classic will be contested at the Covelli Centre today.

Two girls games will be played, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

At noon the first of five boys games will start.

Golf course closed

The Mill Creek Park Golf Course is now closed for the 2010 golfing season.

It will reopen in the spring of 2011, weather permitting.

The Pro Shop at the golf course will remain open for holiday shopping needs in December, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

It is closed on Sundays.

Nuzzo mixed leaders

After the first weekend of the 7th annual Youngstown Senior Mixed Doubles bowling tournament at West Side Lanes, Sandy Guerrieri and Joe Nuzzo currently lead with 1359.

The team of Nancy Hays-Cramer and Marshall McCree is second with 1350, while the duo of Gloria Tiberio and Ted Bundy stand in third with 1349.
