The Turning Foundation announced the award winners of its first round of Innovative Teacher Mini Grants to greater Mahoning Valley educators.
Innovative projects that received funding include proposals submitted by the following teachers: John Wolford, LaBrae Middle School; Leanne Thomas, Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High School; Shari Zachasee, Taft Elementary in Youngstown; and Christina Kappler, Lordstown Elementary School.
Turning Foundation’s Innovative Teacher Mini Grants are an effort to promote and support creative and innovative classroom practices in local schools. Awards were available for up to $2,000 per project and descriptions of the winning projects will be posted online so that other educators and students can benefit. The foundation plans to award these grants annually to classroom teachers in the local area displaying creative and innovative practices that reflect 21st-century skill development.
Some of these projects were made possible through funding support from the Warren Area Chamber of Commerce Education, Civic and Cultural Foundation, Inc.
John Wilson, Turning Foundation’s executive director, said, “By giving teachers potential resources to ‘think outside the box,’ educators can design lessons and activities to support 21st-century teaching and learning.”
