Down’s syndrome group receives grant
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley (DSAV) has received a $1,500 CVS Caremark Community Grant.
The DSAV will offer these funds through the DSAV Family Grant program as a part of its ongoing mission to provide support, advocacy and resources to families of individuals with Down syndrome in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
DSAV members who wish to enroll their children under 21 with Down syndrome, in inclusive social or recreational opportunities can apply for the funds.
The CVS Community Participation Fund and DSAV funds will provide up to $500 per family, per year, to help pay for costs related to activities such as Boy/Girl Scouts, Gymboree, ballet, swimming, dance, therapy sessions, etc. These activities must be open to all children with and without disabilities.
“We are so thrilled to offer funds to our members so that their children can participate in programs and activities in our Valley,” said DSAV co-founder and board President Michele Jones. “The funds from the CVS Caremarks Community Grant give us the wonderful opportunity to provide the finances for programs or events our members might otherwise not be able to participate in. We are very excited that the DSAV can put back into our Valley some of what the Valley has so graciously given to us.”
Grants are awarded to organizations that share a common vision with CVS Caremark’s All Kids Can‚Ñ¢ program, which strives to make life easier for children with disabilities.
The goal of the program is to create more inclusive environments for children with and without disabilities to build self-esteem, lasting friendships and social skills, and to help children without disabilities learn diversity and tolerance.
“CVS Caremark is committed to helping children with disabilities learn, play and succeed in life,” said CVS District Store Manager Carl Sobek. “Through this grant, we are proud to be able to help make an impact on the lives of children in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.”
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley serves families and professionals in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
