Canfield wrestlers third at duals tourney
The Canfield wrestling teams started the season with two meets on Saturday.
The varsity team traveled to Cuyahoga Falls for the Justin Walsh Duals Tournament and earned a third-place finish. The Cards defeated Akron North 81-0, Akron Hoban 64-15 and Akron Garfield 58-24. Canfield lost two close matches, falling to Barberton 37-26 and to Cuyahoga Falls 41-32.
Several wrestlers went undefeated at the tournament, winning all five of their matches. That group included Anthony Spencer (103 pounds), Jake Dunbar (125), Robby Reed (135) and Eric Mirto (160).
Korey Frost (112), Zach Kay (119) and Lucas Daprile (145) each went 4-1. Also posting wins for the Cardinals were Richard Rapone, Alex DeChurch, PJ Hido, Hayden Smith, Sam Conner, Rob Gleichert and Curtis Burns.
The junior varsity team was also in action Saturday, traveling to Lake for a kick-off JV tournament. The team also wrestled well in this four-man pool style event.
Wrestlers who went undefeated for the JV Cards were Matt Dunbar, Kyle Hido, John Poullas, Tom Crump and Shawn Williams. Also posting wins were Steve Daprile, Nick Borucki, Stephen Hamilton and Matt Ben.
