EASTERN GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Steubenville

Three Eastern Gateway Community College officials recently made a presentation at the 2010 Association of Community College Trustees Conference in Toronto, Ontario. Dorothy Blaner, trustee and secretary; Laura Meeks, president; and Ann Koon, director of public information, presented “Data Watch Results in Retention Growth.” The college’s student success work through the national Achieving the Dream program was discussed. The college’s improvement in student retention and other factors led it to being designated a national Leader College by the Achieving the Dream program. Meeks also made a presentation at the National Council for Workforce Education fall conference in Washington, D.C. “Accelerating Achievement: The Developmental Education Initiative” was the title of the presentation, shared with president of another DEI college. They discussed successful remediation and career readiness.

GANNON UNIVERSITY, Erie, Pa.

A local student at Gannon University recently was honored for his participation in the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Research Day. The student, Gregory R. Delost of Struthers, took second place for his poster presentation, “Holistic Approach to Combating Staphylococcus aureus through Photobiomodulation via Light-Emitting Diodes.” Another Gannon student, Amanda E. Stolz, was a co-author in the project, which is being conducted with Troy Skwor, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at Gannon, and includes collaborations with Dr. Janis Eells, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Delost is the son of Raymond M. and Maria E. Delost and is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School.
