Boardman middle school wrestlers to compete
The Boardman Center and Glenwood Middle School wrestling teams are two of 11 squads competing in the 2010 “Canfield Challenge” middle school wrestling tournament today. The event will begin at 10 a.m.
In addition to Center, Glenwood and host Canfield, teams competing are Poland, Alliance, Beaver Local, Girard, Reed (Hubbard), Southeast, South Range and Waterloo.
Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.
Freshman girls open with two victories
The Boardman freshman girls basketball team began the season 2-0 with victories over Lake and Canfield during the first week of the season.
On Saturday, the Lady Spartans earned a 45-29 win over Federal League rival Lake. Briana Fonderlin led the way with 12 points. Jenna Kuczek added 11 and Jada Redd contributed eight, while Kelly Tomcsanyi grabbed seven rebounds and had six points.
On Tuesday against the Cardinals, Boardman used a strong full-court press to secure a 42-23 win.
For the Spartans, Kuczek played a great game and had a team-high 11 points. Fonderlin added nine and Megan Volosin and Tomcsanyi each scored six. Redd scored five and Nichole Hillard rounded out the scoring with three.
Amateur boxing today
Sam Calderon’s United City Boxing Club will sponsor “Season’s Beatings,” an amateur boxing tournament today at the ITAM on S. Meridian.
There will be at least 16 bouts featuring fighters from all over Ohio and Pennsylvania, with many from the Youngstown area.
General admission tickets are $15, with tables of 10 for $250.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight at 7. Weigh-in is at 5:30.

Emily Abraham is tournament MVP
Washington & Jefferson College sophomore women’s basketball player Emily Abraham (Boardman) scored at least 15 points in three consecutive games last week, leading W&J to a pair of wins and earning the Most Valuable Player award at the 26th Annual Marietta College Turkey Shoot.
Abraham earned the tournament MVP honors after scoring a combined 34 points and shooting 57 percent from beyond the arc in W&J victories over Wooster (69-54) and Penn State-Beaver (62-55).
Abraham led the Presidents with five of the team’s 10 three-pointers against Wooster, including four in the first half. She finished with a game-high 19 points.
She then led W&J in the championship game by scoring 15 points, grabbing seven rebounds and notching four assists and three steals. Abraham scored a career-high 20 points in the Presidents’ 77-73 loss to Allegheny College. She knocked down five three-pointers and added five rebounds.
The 5-foot-6 guard is shooting 45 percent from the field this season, including 47 percent from beyond the arc. She has scored 70 points, already surpassing her total from last season (44).
Boardman girls top Alliance, 89-12
Brooke Meenachan scored 19 points as the Boardman High girls basketball team defeated Alliance 89-12 Nov. 24.
Emily Gibbs scored 11 points and Kayleigh Lipke 10 for the Spartans.
Holiday Basketball Classic is today
The Youngstown/Warren Holiday Basketball Classic will be contested at the Covelli Centre today.
Two girls games will be played, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
At noon the first of five boys games will start.
Golf course closed
The Mill Creek Park Golf Course is now closed for the 2010 golfing season.
It will reopen in the spring of 2011, weather permitting.
The Pro Shop at the golf course will remain open for holiday shopping needs in December, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..
It is closed on Sundays.
Nuzzo mixed leaders
After the first weekend of the 7th annual Youngstown Senior Mixed Doubles bowling tournament at West Side Lanes, Sandy Guerrieri and Joe Nuzzo currently lead with 1359.
The team of Nancy Hays-Cramer and Marshall McCree is second with 1350, while the duo of Gloria Tiberio and Ted Bundy stand in third with 1349.
