YOUNGSTOWN

The 90th anniversary of the Youngstown Lions Club was celebrated recently during a dinner and meeting at the Youngstown Club.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious Melvin E. Jones Award to Jack Prest in recognition of his outstanding service to the local club.

The featured speaker was Paul Sherer, a past international director, who spoke of his trips throughout the world in an effort to discover how many people have been helped by the Lions.

During the past 90 years the local group has donated more than $24,000 to such organizations as the Rescue Mission, Second Harvest Food Bank, Goodwill, Easter Seals, the Rich Center and other nonprofit groups. The funds were raised at the group’s annual turtle derbies in Lowellville.

The club also provides free eye screenings at the Canfield Fair and eyeglasses and exams for those who cannot afford them.

Plans are being made for the club’s annual Christmas party at the Saxon Club for more than 100 challenged children, who will receive gifts of their choice from Santa.

Club meetings take place weekly at the Youngstown Club. New members are welcome and can find more information about the organization by contacting Youngstown Lions Club on Facebook, visiting www.youngstownlionsclub.org or writing to Youngstown Lions Club, P. O. Box 1262, Youngstown, OH 44501.
