The Trumbull County Metropolitan Parks District will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Newton Falls Community Center, 52 E. Quarry Street, to discuss the Mahoning River canoe trail.
The parks district has applied to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for the portion of the river from Perkins Park in Warren to Foster Park in Newton Township to be designated an Ohio Water Trail, said Zachary Svette, project coordinator for the MetroParks.
The designation would make it easier to receive grant allocations for the trail, Svette said.
The trail already has existing locations for canoes and kayaks to enter and exit the river at Foster Park, Packard Park, Canoe City in Warren Township and Rotary Park on First Street in Newton Falls.
The MetroParks district also has five locations it hopes to further develop for entrance and exit locations, Svette said.
They are in Burbank Park in Warren, Thomas A. Swift MetroPark in Braceville Township, the Braceville Nature Preserve across state Route 5 from the Paul Tessler golf course in Braceville Township, and two smaller, emergency locations on Linwood Drive in Warren and Woodview Circle in Warren Township.
