YSU men, women fall on road

Staff report

Green Bay, Wis.

Sophomore Damian Eargle led four Penguins scoring in double figures with 13 points and added four blocks, but the YSU men’s basketball team fell to Green Bay, 74-59, on Saturday at the Resch Center.

Senior Vytas Sulskis scored 11 points and junior Devonte Maymon and freshman Kendrick Perry each added 10 for the Penguins (4-3, 0-2), who have lost two straight.

After building an eight-point lead, 54-46, midway through the second half, the Penguins were outscored by the Phoenix, 28-5 to close out the game.

The Phoenix (4-4, 1-1) were able to capitalize on a couple Penguin turnovers and used a 10-1 run over a four-minute span to regain the lead, 56-55, and never trailed again.

The Penguins, who trailed by six points, 38-32, 18 seconds into the second half, were able to gain momentum and used a 22-8 run over the next 10 minutes of the stanza to build an eight-point lead, 54-46, with 10:10 left.

Two free throws by Maymon, a layup by junior Ashen Ward and an old-fashion three-point play by Sulskis at the 17:58 mark gave the Penguins their first lead of the game, 39-38.

After three more lead changes, a layup by Perry and a three-point play by Eargle gave the Penguins a four-point edge, 46-42, at the 14:23 mark. Another layup by Perry, two free throws and a layup by DuShawn Brooks extended the Guins advantage to eight, 52-44.

Bryquise Perine’s layup cut the deficit to six, 52-46, but a layup by Tre Brewer gave the Penguins back their largest lead of eight.

Women

Washington, D.C.

The YSU women shot 24.6 percent to spoil a solid defensive effort in a 57-41 loss to American at Bender Arena on Saturday.

The Penguins held the Eagles to 35.7 percent and held their top two scorers to a combined nine points. Alexis Dobbs scored 14 points and hit four of American’s nine 3-pointers.

Kenya Middlebrooks scored a season-high 16 points, but no other YSU player had more than six.

Brandi Brown, the Horizon League’s leading scorer, was held scoreless and went 0-for-9 from the field.

The sophomore forward grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, and the Penguins won the rebounding battle 41-37.

Neither team started either half well on the offensive end. American scored the first six points of the second period and held YSU scoreless until Heidi Schlegel hit a jumper with 13:32 remaining.
