Prep bowling is ready to resume
YOUNGSTOWN
The high school bowling season opens this week, with matches scheduled Monday and Wednesday.
On the girls side, Boardman is defending state champion while Hubbard’s Samantha Dudley returns as a junior after placing third at state in 2009-10.
Area director Fran Miller reported that one change for 2010-11 pertains to the open substitution rule.
“Bowlers can be subbed at any time,” Miller said, explaining that it’s not necessary to wait until the end of a game or for a fill-ball (third ball in 10th frame).
“Now we can sub mid-game or mid-frame,” said Miller, who is also an adviser for the sport at the high school level in Ohio.
Dean Grover won the Thanksgiving Sweeper at Bell-Wick Bowl with a score of 1173 while Jim Wolcott was the regular-division runner-up with 1138.
Joe Nuzzo’s 1108 was good for third, followed by Frank Corso (1107), Bruce Boyd (1101), Tony Carson (1096), Bill Oatman (1087) and Rob Harvischak (1076).
Nuzzo’s 1108 was also good for first in the senior division, while Boyd placed second with 1101.
Competitors were challenged by a sport-shot condition Florida (7 seven oil pattern). Sixty bowlers participated.
Robert Serich’s 804 led Sanko Photogrphy/ITAM Classic at Holiday on Nov. 22 while Teri Haefke’s 290 gave rise to a 751 in C-G Pro Shop/Ladies Trio at Wedgewood on Nov. 22.
Steve Devore bowled his highest game and set in Knights of the Round Table at Boardman on Nov. 22. With a 125 average, Devore went 151 pins over average for a series for 526 — his first 500. His top game was 255.
