Blue Iris moves to Niles, changes specialty to cupcakes — 46 flavors of them

NILES

The former Blue Iris Cafe in downtown Warren has reinvented itself.

The Blue Iris Cakery will open in Niles on Tuesday with 46 flavors of cupcakes. There’s the Chocolate Elvis, with banana cake and chocolate peanut-butter frosting and Lemon Zinger, with lemon cake, raspberry and coconut. There’s also peppermint, gingerbread, red velvet and chocolate with caramel butter cream.

“We go from one end of the spectrum to the other,” said owner Melissa Yohman-Murphy.

Yohman-Murphy and her husband, Steve, closed the Blue Iris restaurant this fall after deciding to open one of the few shops around dedicated only to cupcakes.

“When we had the restaurant, everyone asked me to make cupcakes,” said Yohman-Murphy.

“I started so many kinds. I couldn’t keep up with the orders.”

There will be several base cupcake flavors daily with rotating special flavors each week, along with sugar-free, vegan and gluten-free choices. The cakery will have giant cinnamon rolls each morning along with breakfast cupcakes such as French Toast, made of cinnamon streusel and maple frosting.

The Blue Iris Cakery is at 606 Robbins Ave., Niles. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Hours will be extended during the holidays.
