The junior guard also became the 45th Connecticut player to score 1,000 career points, reaching the milestone in his 77th game. The victory was coach Jim Calhoun’s 830th, moving him into a tie with former Mount St. Mary’s coach Jim Phelan for sixth place on the career list. Freshman Jeremy Lamb added 13 points for the Huskies (7-0), Alex Oriakhi, Niels Giffey and Roscoe Smith each had 11 and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel finished with 10. VILLANOVA, PA.

Antonio Pena had 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and Corey Stokes scored 17. Five different players scored for the Wildcats (6-1) during a 13-0 run early in the second half that helped make this one more comfortable. Villanova beat its Big 5 rival for the 11th time in the last 14 games in the series. The rivalry that dates to 1921 and features schools separated by 6.7 miles has been a lopsided one. Villanova leads the series 44-24. The Wildcats shook off a sluggish first half and a poor shooting night to win their first game since losing the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Carl Jones led the Hawks (3-4) with 19 points.
