Cake mix triggers haz-mat scare at Philly jail

PHILADELPHIA

A batch of cake mix mailed to a Philadelphia prison inmate triggered a brief evacuation and investigation by hazardous-materials teams.

The powdery cake mix was found Friday morning in the incoming mail that was being inspected by a correctional officer.

The substance was determined to be cake mix, and the building was reopened about 12:30 p.m.

Officials said the offices and the inmate housing are separated by a long corridor, and no inmates were removed from the jail.
