Don’t let the cold breezes — aka The Hawk — and snowy streets stop you from attending some

important December events.

For example, there is a workshop designed for women who want to learn about financial fortitude. It is called “Do More With Less,” and it will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Williamson Elementary School, 58 Williamson Ave., Youngstown.

The Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is sponsoring the session. The keynote luncheon speaker is Carmelita Douglas, director of internal audit for the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority.

The session, which will feature advice from seven other local experts, will focus on financial literacy and education, entrepreneurship and homeownership and also will give insight into careers for women.

The registration deadline is Tuesday, so call 330-727-9188 or e-mail your plan to attend to DSTfinance@aol.com. And you can’t beat the price. The workshop is free, and the Deltas will dole out some fancy door prizes.

If you have read my columns over the years, you know I am a proud graduate of East High School Class of 1970. Well, the All East High Alumni Reunion Association is having its Golden Holiday dinner-dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Archangel Michael Hall, 401 12th St., Campbell.

The cost is $25 per person. The reservation deadline was Dec. 1, but I have a suspicion the association still has tickets left. If you’re interested, call these numbers: 330-398-8945, 330-423-2605 or 330-207-6202. No tickets will be sold at the door. If you like to indulge in your favorite holiday beverage, bring it with you. Alumni from The Rayen School, North High, South High, Chaney, Wilson, Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney are welcome to join in the fun.

I attended the dinner-dance a few years ago and had a great time reminiscing with classmates, so come on out and meet new friends and get reacquainted with old ones. Plans also are under way this month to

organize a reception for incoming Youngstown Schools Superintendent Connie Hathorn by the Youngstown Area Association of Black Educators.

Joining in the planning process are the Youngstown Chapter of the NAACP, the Greater

Warren-Youngstown Urban League, the Youngstown Chapter of National Council of Negro Women, the aforementioned Delta Sigma Thetas, the Youngstown Coalition of Black Women and Community Mobilization Committee.

The reception is planned for Jan. 14 at the new Wilson Middle School at Gibson Street and Indianola Avenue. The time will be announced at a later date.

The black educators association, which has been around for more than 20 years, says the event will provide the new superintendent a chance to meet the community and allow students, parents and educators to come out and support Hathorn. He will replace Wendy Webb, who retires at the end of this month.

Sponsorships are $50, $100 and $150 or more, and all sponsors will be listed in the reception program. Checks should be made payable to the Youngstown Area Association of Black Educators, P.O. Don’t forget that Kwanzaa, the African American cultural celebration, is from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
