WARREN
After weeks of following leads without success, the Trumbull County Sheriff’s office is hoping that a $1,000 reward being offered by the family and friends of an assault victim will help identify a suspect.
A woman in her 60s was riding her bicycle on Custer-Orangeville Road near the entrance to Sharon Speedway in Hartford Township at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 9 when a man around 30 years old in a gray Chevrolet Impala grabbed her, pulled her off the road, choked her, and attempted to rape her.
An off-duty Ohio State Highway Patrol officer riding a motorcycle stopped to investigate what was happening and confronted the man, who fled in his car.
The victim credited the trooper with saving her life, because she was close to being “choked out” when the trooper showed up, police said.
To aid the investigation, the victim’s friends and family have started a bank account called SPEAK OUT at P.O. Box 446, New Castle, PA, 16103, to receive donations to increase the size of the reward, said Deputy Jolene Marcello of the Trumbull County sheriff’s office. Public donations are welcome.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 330-675-2508.
