Girls soccer seniors saluted at banquet

Neighbors | Submitted.The Lady Spartans soccer team presented Dr. Rashid Abdu the game ball used in the Oct. 4 Breast Cancer Awareness game. Abdu is the medical director if the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.
The Boardman Lady Spartans soccer team was honored at its annual awards banquet at The Georgetown Nov. 21.
In addition to honoring its 10 graduating senior players with awards and gifts, the team also presented Dr. Rashid Abdu with a game ball from the Oct. 4 Breast Cancer Awareness game.
Abdu is the medical director of the new Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. The doctor attended the breast cancer fundraiser and stood in the rain to address the team and thank them for their efforts in raising $1,800 for the center.
The pink ribbon game ball was signed by each member of the team and placed in a protective case for Abdu to keep.
Abdu praised the team at the banquet and announced how proud he was of them for their leadership and contribution to the community. He later stated that the game ball would reside in his home until he could place it in its future permanent home at the breast care center.
Abdu was also presented with a shirt declaring him an honorary alumnus of the Boardman Lady Spartans.
During his recognition speechat the banquet, soccer booster President Jim McCreary said “Dr. Abdu, we are very happy our girls are associated with such a wonderful man; a person who has dedicated himself to making the diagnosis, treatment and care of women with breast cancer his top priority.”
