Career center interns learn by doing

For Mahoning County Career and Technical Center students Sean Stamateris and Bill Korda, education doesn’t end when the bell rings.

These seniors in the Manufacturing Technology/Precision Machining program are extending their learning far beyond the classroom with careers at two local companies.

Stamateris, of Poland, began working with CTM Integrations of Salem in May as an intern and now is an employee working evenings and weekends around his school schedule.

Korda, of West Branch, has gained similar experiences working with Slanker Tool & Machine also located in Salem.

“You gain a lot of experience, real quick when working on the job,” Stamateris said.

Korda agreed, adding that the equipment that they’ve been able to work with at their jobs has enhanced their learning experience.

“I’ve been able to see a lot of different machine set-ups and programs that I wouldn’t have been able to experience,” he said.

The students gained exposure to all facets of the Manufacturing Technology industry, including CNC operation, safety and set-up, drawing with Mastercam and the operation and running of many different machines.

Both students plan to further their education and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering once they graduate.
