Historical society hosts birthday event
SALEM
Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Braodway Ave., was the host for the 80th birthday of Jeanine Smith of Salem, who visited the museum on Aug. 22, and was accompanied by her husband, Daniel E. Smith, and their sons, Tim, Thad and Greg, and their grandsons, Brian, Derek and Tobias of Salem.
The tour included a stop at the “The Beat Goes On” exhibit, which features the extended history of music of Salem, and an opportunity to hear the Brooks Bowman song, “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” as played on a newly restored player piano.
The group learned that George Chappell, Mr. Smith’s grandfather, was an early conductor of the Quaker City Band, organized in 1896 and known today as the American Legion Band. The museum is open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. each Sunday.
