Man fatally shot

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A 45-year-old Volant, Pa., man was shot and killed on the west side of New Castle on Saturday night.

Frank Breitenstein was shot about 7:30 p.m. in the vicinity of 314 Bell Ave., New Castle police said. He died shortly after being admitted to Jameson Memorial Hospital with a chest injury.

New Castle police had no additional details on the shooting, which is being investigated as a homicide. No arrest had been made as of Sunday night.

New Castle police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting call the department at 724-656-3587.

Hit, killed by car

The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said charges are pending against Jason Snay, 34, of Salem, who struck and killed Matthew D. Flugan, 37, of East Rochester with his car about 8:50 p.m. Saturday on Speidel Road in Columbiana County. Flugan was dead at the scene.

OSHP said the accident occurred in the westbound lane, where Flugan was kneeling or sitting in the roadway. OSHP speculates that Flugan was attending to his dog, which had been hit, when he was hit by Snay’s car. The dog also died.

The name of the woman injured in a house fire Saturday at 2711 Orchard Ave. has not been released by the Howland Fire Department, which continues to investigate the structure fire with the state fire marshal’s office.

She was taken to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Akron Burn Unit.

Two adults and two children who lived at the residence are being helped by the Red Cross.

The structure was deemed a total loss with more than $50,000 in structural and content damage.

Sex-offender grant

COLUMBUS

Ohio will receive federal funding to create an automated system for contacting all the state’s sex offenders around the time they are required to re-register their whereabouts with law enforcement.

The $155,546 grant also will help pay the costs of extraditing sex offenders who have moved to other states without informing county sheriffs of their new addresses.
