Scrappers are routed by Doubledays
Staff report
AUBURN, N.Y.
Gustavo Pierre had four hits, and Oliver Dominguez had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Auburn Doubledays past the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 11-0, in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Friday night.
The loss was the third in the last four games for the Scrappers, who have scored just three runs in that stretch.
Mahoning Valley (28-39) has been outscored 21-1 in its last two games and is now in last place in the NYPL’s Pinckney Division, 11 games behind first-place Batavia.
Auburn (29-37) is in fifth place in the Pinckney Division, 9 1/2 games out of first.
But the Doubledays didn’t play like a team struggling to stay out of last place on Friday.
They finished with 14 hits and scored in six of the eight innings in which they batted.
The Scrappers were held to six hits, all singles except for Kevin Fontanez’s 12th double of the season.
Jordan Cooper (5-4) took the loss, allowing five runs — four earned — and seven hits in four innings.
Shawn Griffith (2-4) was the winner, pitching two hitless innings in relief.
