The Fitch tennis team finished 6-10 in 2009, but a fifth-place finish in the Federal League has head coach Janet Polish and her team primed for improvement in 2010.

Currently in her 16th season as the head coach of the program, Polish concedes it will be tough task in trying to lift the stranglehold that North Canton Hoover and Massillon Jackson have on the league title. But her team is ready to accept the challenge.

“The Federal League always has excellent competition and this year it will be no different. It’s a challenge, but one that we look forward to in our last season of league play,” Polish noted.

Gone from last year’s team is Melissa Lynn (No. 1 singles), Rachel Detwiler (No. 2 singles), Angel Cusick (No. 2 doubles) and Jamie Mazei.

A senior-dominated squad returns, however, and could make some noise if they come together early and improve each time out.

The Falcons’ senior class includes Ali Macioge (No. 1 singles), Sarah Ragan (No. 2 singles), Amber Kovach (No. 3 singles), Victoria Phelps (No. 2 doubles), Caitlin Sheridan, Michelle Renda, Noor Ramahi and newcomer Kellie Wenick, who comes to the Falcons from Raleigh, N.C.

The lone junior is Nicole Wenick, who along with sister, Kellie, has already made some noise at No. 1 doubles. They have proven to be a very formidable doubles team, having started the season by winning three of their first four doubles matches.
