Carousel residents and community leaders who have donated their time to Carousel Center gathered for a picture. Organizations represented included Boy Scout Troop 84, Youngstown Public Library, Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and the Canfield Historical Society, among others.

Ten individuals with disabilities, along with the passionate staff of the Carousel Center, took a few moments Aug. 18 to say thank You.
The Carousel Center is “dedicated to serving adults with disabilities, and through the community’s generous efforts, ensuring their lives can be a continuing learning journey.”
“We opened our first residential care home for adults with disabilities in 1994, but even 16 residential homes later, we felt that there was a large recreational gap,” explained Shannon Arcade, Carousel CEO.
“Since our inception last year, we’ve planned themed, educational month-long programs, including local history. The community support has been wonderful.”
The adults in the Carousel day program have learned from volunteers from the Youngstown Playhouse, Canfield Historical Society, Mill Creek Park, and Youngstown Public Library, among others. Boy Scout troop 84 assisted residents in planting a vegetable garden behind the facility, and the bounty goes to local food banks.
“This luncheon is a celebration of our first year in business, but also a look to the year ahead,” said Arcade. “We are always looking for volunteers, new learning experiences for our residents and we even have the facilities to accommodate more day residents. It’s a wonderful family to be a part of.”
