Singers needed for Canfield Fair service

On Sept. 5, the Canfield Fair Choir will perform during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. Singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service.

Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, assisted by Margaret Fieger and Barbara Fieger.

Canfield moms host carnival pavilion

Mothers of Preschoolers of Canfield will host a fall kick-off carnival at Boardman Park’s Chester Long pavilion Sept. 11 from noon to 3 p.m.

There will be free food, games and prizes for the whole family, including gift cards from local businesses and family-themed gift baskets.

Preschoolers’ September meeting

The first meeting of the year for the Mothers of Preschoolers of Canfield will be Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the Old North Church. The meetings are open to any mom with at least one child kindergarten or younger. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Top readers honored

Top readers of the Summer Reading 2010 program will be honored 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Splash down activities are also planned.

Get stumped by celebrity scholars

Before hitting the books, stop by the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and match celebrities with they colleges they graduated from and win a prize during library hours in September.

Read tales to tails

School-aged children can sign up and read to registered therapy dogs Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The program is designed to help develop reading skills, promote confidence and encourage a love for reading. Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion. Readers may bring a book of their choice. Get a flu shot at the fair

Walgreens will offer seasonal flu shots at its location in the fairgrounds during the Canfield Fair.

The cost is $29.99, cash only or the co-pay of Medicare. The shots will be available every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Walgreens will be located at the corner of Miller and Kohler.

From Friday to Sept. 6, the AARP/Wellness bus will be on location and offering screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, glucose and body mass index from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Drive-through dinner is Thursday

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, will host a takeout dinner Thursday from 4 p.m. until sold out.

The cost for the meal is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, green beans and brownie. No reservations needed.

Fly a flag on the last two holidays for free

The Rotary Club of Canfield is offering to place flags in residents’ yards on Labor Day and Veteran’s Day in 2010 for no charge when they subscribe to the 2011 Fly the Flag program.

The subscription cost is $25 and includes Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day flag service provided by the Canfield Rotary. A plastic pipe will be installed flush to the ground and a 3-foot by 10-foot flag on a 10-foot staff will be placed in the holder each holiday. Caps will be provided to cover the pipe when not in use. Bob Davis Fairway Ford will paint the back and side of car windows with Canfield pride and spirit notes Sept. 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the dealership located on the corner of state Route 224 and Cardinal Drive. The event is free, but any donations will benefit Canfield extracurricular activities.

Farm closes for Fair

Metroparks Farm will close during the Canfield Fair Sunday through Sept. 6, but you can visit the farm at Old McDonald’s Barn on the fairgrounds.

Mill Creek ABWA meeting in Canfield

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Sept. 14 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield at 6 p.m.

The menu will include stuffed cabbage, chicken francaise, potatoes, vegetables, salads, cake and beverages for $16.50.

Library closed for Labor Day

All branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be closed Sept. 6 in observance of Labor Day.

Have fun and watch the sun set at the farm

Bring the entire family to MetroParks Farm Sept. 18 from 5-8 p.m. for a fall celebration. Ride a hay wagon pulled by draft horses, visit with farm animals, explore the AgVenture barn, get lost in a giant corn maze, sample cider and homemade apple butter and roast marshmallows over a campfire. Young children can search for toys in a haystack. Older children can compete in a sack race and adults can try an egg toss. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the sunset while folk singer John Mosey performs.

Join the farmer and the chef for fresh food

Local farmers will be paired with local chefs to create dishes from fresh, locally-grown vegetables, fruits and meats Sept. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at MetroParks Farm. CCNC hosts golf outing

Canfield Community Net Care is hosting its ninth annual Paul Baringer Golf Classic Sept. 13 at Mill Creek Park golf course in Canfield.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by breakfast at 10:15 a.m.

The shotgun start begins at 10:30 a.m.

Dinner and an awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host the “Health at Home” program Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon or 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Women’s health night

The St. Elizabeth Breast Care Advisory Board presents “Women’s Health Night” from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.

The event will offer a free health screening and mammogram for women 40-64 who are underinsured or uninsured and who do not have a history of breast cancer.

Quilts needed for show in September

Lordstown High School will host the Fabric Patchers Annual Quilt show Sept. 18-19. Quilts will be accepted Sept. 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the school’s library.

Instructor Heidi Suraci welcomes students of all levels to enjoy a blend of yoga styles amidst the powers of nature. Tuesdays will feature a beginner’s class from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and an intermediate class from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. All levels can participate on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Garden extends hours

The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center will be open to visitors on Wednesdays until 8 p.m. through August. The Antonucci Library and Shop in the Gardens will have extended hours. The Garden Caf will be open until 7 p.m.

Take a bus trip to New York City

You can visit New York City without driving yourself. The Nancy L. Weimer third annual ”NYC Shoptober Shuttle” is Oct. 15-17. Proceeds benefit the Nancy L. Weimer Scholarship Fund.

Weimer, a Boardman native, passed away in 2007 from cancer.

The trip honors the lives of those who have triumphed over cancer while remembering those who are no longer with us. The bus will depart at 6 a.m. Oct. 15 and leave NYC at 11 a.m. Oct. 17.

The cost is $315 for four people in a room, $365 for three people in a room and $470 for two people in a room.

Cost includes the bus trip, two nights at the Radisson Martinique Hotel on Broadway and a $30 donation to the Nancy L. Weimer Scholarship Fund.

ODOT plans traffic signal replacement in Boardman

The Ohio Department of Transportation proposes to replace the existing electric traffic control device at the intersection of state Route 7 (Market Street) and Southwoods Avenue in Boardman Township.

During construction, two-way traffic will be maintained at all times at the state Route 7/Southwoods Avenue intersection except when it is necessary to stop traffic during the installation of overhead electric traffic control device signal heads and associated equipment.

The stoppage shall be limited to a maximum of 10 minutes and traffic may be stopped a maximum of one time in any one 30-minute period. No lane closures shall be implemented during the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. When the intersection electric traffic control device must be taken out of service by the project contractor, the outage shall not exceed four hours and shall not include the hours of 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The intersection shall be protected with law enforcement officers provided by the project contractor. Access shall be maintained to adjacent properties at all times during construction of the project. This project is expected to begin construction in the spring 2011.

Questions and/or comments regarding this project may be submitted by Aug. 30.

Free hot dogs at Mill Creek MetroParks

Weather permitting, Mill Creek MetroParks will have free hot dogs for the public Mondays and Tuesdays. The hot dogs will be served Mondays at the James L. Wick Recreation Area, off McCollum Road, and Tuesdays at Scholl Recreation Area.

The hot dogs are sponsored by the Salvation Army’s Mahoning County Services. This will last through Tuesday.

Church offers monthly drive-through dinner

The Western Reserve United Methodist Church on Canfield Road is offering a drive-through dinner on the first Thursday of every month starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until the food is sold out. No reservations are required, just follow the signs in the drive and someone will take your order.

The dinners are $7 and include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Band rehearsals open to the community

Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

First Night Canfield is seeking volunteers for its New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts.

First Night Canfield is seeking about a dozen sixth through 12th graders to establish a Junior FNC Board.

This board will be responsible for planning, fundraising and implementing the teen event between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve.

It requires an interest in seeing an event that would attract their friends and dedication. Rediscover the falls

According to legend, in August of 1797 Isaac Powers and Phineas Hill discovered what is now called Lanterman’s Falls at Mill Creek MetroParks. Retrace their route 213 years later. Meet at Fellows Riverside Gardens Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for a moderately difficult 7-mile hike.

Make botanical pottery

Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a clay bowl embossed with leaf patters Sept. 14 at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The work will be glazed with autumn colors and ready to take home approximately three weeks after the class.

Become a triple threat performer this fall

The Stage Door School for Performing Arts will open in Liberty Township this fall and offer an array of classes in acting, dancing and singing that will develop the “Triple Threat” performer.

Students of all ages can choose from an entire catalog of dance subjects, acting sessions and voice classes. Workshops and clinics will be held regularly with casting agents and agencies from L.A. and New York City. Students will get to be a part of all plays, performances and musicals performed at The Stage Door. The Stage Door will also offer Visual Art classes, Fairytale Theatre (an enchanted fairyland for 2 to 8-year-olds), birthday parties and Drop-in Dance classes.
