A group children from Boardman and Poland said goodbye to eight weeks of playing, exploring, and learning on Aug. 13, as they enjoyed the final day of Adventure camp at Boardman Park.

Karen McCallum, Adventure Camp director and recreation director for Boardman Park, created the program back in 2003 with her children as inspiration.

“I thought, ‘What would I want them to be doing all summer?’ Learning, playing, and making friends, of course.” Adventure Camp aims to do just that, by running for eight weeks every summer for 6 to 12-year-olds and teaching the children science, art, history, creative writing and team-building.

The last day of camp included a wagon ride, singing and dodgeball before parents arrived for a final thank-you presentation. As hugs were exchanged and pictures snapped, McCallum reflected on the camp.

“One of the greatest compliments I’ve received from a parent is that ‘My child comes home exhausted every day.’ That means I’ve done my job well.”
