Transit contracts to be awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

Western Reserve Transit Authority Board of Trustees meets at 3 p.m. today. The board is expected to award contracts for work at Federal station on the driveway, sidewalk and shelters. The meeting also will be the first time that trustees have met in the new administration building at 604 Mahoning Ave., which was paid for by federal stimulus money.

Community forums have been taking place with each of the five finalists for the city schools superintendent position. Those remaining are:

Timothy Dortch, director of student services, Kent City School District, Monday.

Thomas Robey, superintendent, Campbell City School District, Tuesday.

Connie Hathorn, executive director of student support, Akron City School District, Wednesday.

The final forums will begin at 7:30 p.m. at either Choffin Career & Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St., or the board of education building on West Wood Street. Candidates address the community and answer questions.

Free neighborhood mixer at museum

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., Healthy Homeownership Program, and J.P.Morgan Chase Bank will present the first in a series of healthy neighborhoods economic- opportunity mixers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St. The mixer is free and will provide potential homebuyers and business owners with a wealth of information.

Bridge for hero

Poland

A bridge on U.S. Route 224 behind the Poland Library will be named “PFC James H. Spencer USMC Memorial Bridge” to honor a local war hero. The ceremony will take place at an 11 a.m. Sept. 4 and feature a Marine Corps Color Guard and a Marine Corps representative speaker.

Spencer was a 1966 alumnus of Poland Seminary High School who enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduation. He was deployed March 27, 1967, and was killed July 14 of that year in Vietnam. Spencer is buried in Poland Riverside Cemetery.

4th-most affordable

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown-Warren area is the fourth-most-affordable housing market in the country in the second quarter of this year, according to the National Association of Home Builders. The group ranks areas by the percentage of homes that were affordable to a family earning the area’s median income.

The area’s household median income is $53,500, and the median home price is $74,000, according to the association. The area was tied for first with Indianapolis as the most-affordable market in the first quarter.
