Ex-Catholic press leader Edgar Barmann dies at 86

CLEVELAND (AP) — Retired Catholic press leader Edgar Barmann, who served as editor of church-run newspapers in Cleveland and Youngstown, has died. He was 86.

His son, Tim Barmann, said his father died Tuesday at University Hospitals Case Medical Center of Cleveland after a brief illness.

Edgar Barmann was a reporter and columnist for the Ohio State Journal in Columbus in the 1950s.

Later he served as editor of the Catholic Exponent in Youngstown and the Catholic Universe Bulletin in Cleveland and as managing editor of a three-paper chain that also included Toledo's church paper.

He retired in 1986 and lived in Twinsburg in suburban Cleveland.
