YSU baseball team promotes Dan Lipari

Dan Lipari, formerly a volunteer assistant coach on the Youngstown State baseball staff, has been promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, YSU head baseball coach Rich Pasquale announced.

Lipari takes over for his older brother, Tom, who is now the pitching coach at the Univ. of Pittsburgh. Lipari will coach Youngstown State’s pitching staff.

In his lone season at Youngstown State in 2009, Lipari worked primarily with the pitching staff and catchers as a volunteer assistant.

Ludwig named Horizon League soccer POTW

Indianapolis, Ind.

Youngstown State freshman Allison Ludwig has been named the Horizon League women’s soccer player of the week for Aug. 23.

Ludwig led the Penguins to a 1-1 record last week and became the first player in school history to record a hat trick in her very first college game.

Ludwig scored three goals in the Penguins 3-1 win over Robert Morris on Aug. 20.

She also became just the eighth player in school history to score at least three goals in a game.

Ludwig is also just the second YSU soccer player to earn Horizon League player-of-the-week honors.

Rogner named

Youngstown State senior golfer Katie Rogner was named player of the year at the TaylorMade-Adidas Collegiate Tour Championship.

Rogner repeated the honor by earning points for placing in the top six in the summer tournament series.

West Branch High hall of fame inductions

The West Branch High School Hall of Fame Committee will induct eight individuals into the school’s hall of fame during the Alliance football game on Sept. 24.

A free reception, sponsored by the West Branch Alumni Association, will follow the game.

The Alumni Association will have a dinner to honor the inductees on Sept. 23 in the school’s cafeteria.

Tri-City Speedway

FRANKLIN, PA.

Racing started under sunny skies, but heavy rains invaded during heat race competition resulting in the cancellation of the remainder of the show at Tri-City Speedway on Sunday night.

The rain brought an end to Tri-City’s regular season.

As a result of the rainout, the champions were decided, including Jeremiah Shingledecker (DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds), Max Blair (FASTRAK Late Models), Carl McKinney (E Mods) and Russ Coyne (Pro Stocks).

Melissa Mahnke hired

ALLIANCE

The Univ. of Mount Union has announced that Melissa Mahnke has been named assistant women’s volleyball coach.

Mahnke is familiar with the Purple Raiders as she just completed a playing career as the only two-time All-American in school history.

She finished as the school’s all-time kills leader with 1,604 and this past season led Mount Union to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and NCAA Tournament victory.

In 2008, she helped lead a Mount Union squad that posted a school-record 30 victories and the team made the semifinals of the OAC Tournament in each of her four seasons with the team.

Kent State favored

Having won the last two Mid-American Conference regular season crowns, the Kent State Field Hockey program could be well in line for a third straight title this fall.

In a vote taken by the league’s head coaches the Golden Flashes were picked as the favorites for the 2010 season edging out Miami and Ohio.
