Stark County ousts treasurer

CANTON

Commissioners in an Ohio county have voted to oust an elected official over the disappearance of $2.9 million from the county treasury, most stolen by a top aide.

Stark County commissioners voted 3-0 Monday afternoon in Canton to remove Stark County Treasurer Gary Zeigler and choose a replacement.

Most of the missing money was stolen by Zeigler’s former chief deputy, Vincent Frustaci, who has pleaded guilty to federal theft charges. He is awaiting sentencing.

Zeigler had resisted calls for his resignation and said he wasn’t to blame for the theft.

Messages seeking comment were left at a phone listing under his name, with a law office representing him and with a staff member.
