YOUNGSTOWN

Police say speed was a factor in the early Monday morning accident that killed two city residents.

Lamonte Jones Jr., 35, who had listed addresses on Sherwood Avenue and Lanterman Road, Youngstown, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car accident at 5:43 a.m. near Market and Henry streets.

Also pronounced dead was his passenger Sherry Coleman, 51, who was listed at a West Judson Avenue address, according to the Mahoning County coroner’s office.

According to Patricia Garcar of the Youngstown Police Department’s traffic division, Jones was speeding north on Market Street when his car went left of center at a bend in the road.

She said Jones tried to straighten the car out but went into a side slide, striking the telephone pole.

Garcar said Jones and his passenger were not wearing seat belts.

Garcar said police are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
