Miami University Greek groups adopt social-event rules

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Leaders of an Ohio university’s fraternities and sororities have adopted new rules for off-campus social events after three sororities were punished for unruly behavior in the spring.

A spokeswoman at Miami University in Oxford in southwest Ohio said today the groups will require sororities and fraternities to hire security for off-campus events. Another new rule requires designated sober monitors.

Miami suspended two sororities and put a third on probation after reports of drunken shenanigans and damage at spring formal sites including a Cincinnati museum.

A task force of students, staff and student-group advisers met to recommend changes in discipline and policies on student behavior and alcohol.

University spokeswoman Claire Wagner says the new Greek rules developed from those meetings and the school will release its recommendations soon.
