State approves nearly $300K to clean up Campbell property

CAMPBELL — The state has granted the city nearly $300,000 to do an environmental assessment of Sherman International’s Wilson Avenue property, the site of the company’s proposed steel mill project.

The State Controlling Board today awarded the city $229,818 in Clean Ohio funding for a study to evaluate the extent of environmental contamination on the 40-acre property, formerly part of Youngstown Sheet & Tube’s Campbell Works.

Sherman International, a Pittsburgh-based company that specializes in refurbishing and supplying equipment for steel mills, has demolished most of the former Campbell Works structures to sell the parts overseas.

The Clean Ohio funds will be used to assess asbestos in the remaining building, install monitoring wells and complete more than 100 soil borings on the site.
