Scrappers limited to 3 hits in defeat

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

The State College Spikes jumped on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for two runs in the first inning en route to Sunday’s 4-0 victory.

Four Spikes (30-31) pitchers combined to limit the Scrappers (26-36) to three hits. Tyler Waldron (4-5) picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing two hits.

Carlos Moncrief, Chase Burnette and Brian Heere singled for the Scrappers.

Cole Cook (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in the four innings he pitched.

The Spikes’ Andrew Maggi led off his team’s first inning with a double. Mel Rojas followed with a RBI single for a 1-0 lead. After Aldalberto Santos singled, Rojas scored on a groundout.

The Spikes added a pair of runs in the seventh inning against reliever Julio Ramirez. Pat Irvine’s homer to lead off the inning extended the Spikes’ lead to 3-0. Kelson Brown doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Jhonathan Ramos relieved Wadron in the sixth inning and allowed no hits in two innings of work. Justin Ennis and Jason Townsend each tossed one inning to close the game.

Following tonight’s game, both teams will travel to Niles for a three-game series at Eastwood Field beginning on Tuesday.
