Support kids who oppose violence

The Youngstown City Schools are used to getting a bad “rap.” All kinds of allegations are lodged against them (the drop-out rates, low academic standards, and violence in the schools).

So when I learned that a group of young people involved in a program called “Sojourn to the Past” petitioned the school board to set aside a week deemed “Nonviolent Week” and a board member voted against it, I was appalled. What was Michael Murphy thinking?

It would seem to me that when our youth are doing positive things, we as a community, especially the board members, should give our 100 percent support. I personally cannot imagine anyone for any reason voting against nonviolence. We as a community need to be very aware of the persons we elect to do our business. The children are our future. We need people making sound decisions and have wisdom enough to support youth that are trying to make a difference.
