Strong pitching lifts Scrappers to victory

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Jordan Cooper gave up one run over five innings to help the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 2-1 victory over State College in a New York-Penn League game on Saturday.

Cooper (5-3) surrendered three hits with a walk and four strikeouts for the Scrappers (26-35), who are tied with Auburn for last place in the Pinckney Division.

It’s the third straight loss for the Scrappers.

Nathan Striz (one inning), Takafumi Nakamura (1 1/3) and James Ehlert (12/3 innings) combined for four innings of scoreless relief.

The Scrappers’ only blemish was a solo homer by Matt Curry in the fifth.

With the game tied 1-1, the Scrappers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth when Chase Burnette led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Trent Baker’s single.

Moises Montero added two hits, including a double, for Mahoning Valley while Nicholas Bartolone singled and drove in the other run after Carlos Moncrief doubled to lead off the game.

Mahoning Valley has two more games in State College before heading home for a three-game set against the Spikes starting Tuesday at Eastwood Field.
