The Bulldogs enjoyed a fast start in 2009 before finishing 7-4 with a second loss to Crestview in the playoffs. Later, they took another loss as head coach Jeff Sharkey has returned to Barberton (his alma mater) to coach. With 108 victories, Gary A. Mattes takes over for Sharkey and has to replace a fabulous senior class that included QB Shane Peterson, WR Austin Cope and lineman Ben Gysin. He has seven starters returning, including RB Corey Barnhouse and linemen John Green and Antonio Diaz-Guy. The Bulldogs run a Pro I spread on offense and play a 3-5 or 4-4 on defense. Mattes admits the Bulldogs “were hit hard with the graduation of 19 seniors. With a core of hard-working lettermen, we hope to build on last year’s success and produce another winning season. We have some talented skill players a lot of potential amongst our offensive linemen. Our defense will use its quickness to play with an aggressive style, hoping to create turnovers.” Mattes said he expects defending league champion Crestview “to reload and is the team to beat for the league title. Columbiana will be solid. We hope to earn some respect ... and place in the top three in the league.”
