Penguins youth swimmers compete in Nebraska

Five area swimmers from Penguin Swimming competed in the USA Swimming Central Zone Age Group Championship in Lincoln, Neb., Aug. 6-9.

The swimmers represented Lake Erie, which was one of 15 areas represented by the entire Central Zone of the United States and were joined by more than 500 swimmers from across the central and northeastern part of the country.

The swimmers included Canfield’s Daniel Bogen, 13-14 boys, 50 and 100 free; Matthew Bogen, 11-12 boys, 50 breaststroke; Boardman’s Brooke Bailey, 13-14 girls, 200 and 100 breaststroke; and Warren’s Emily Thirion and Aimee Gysegem.

During the trip, the swimmers were able to workout at the University of Iowa, visit the Nebraska football stadium and the meet itself was held in the historic Woods Pool in Lincoln, the site of the 1968 National Championship swim meet.

The Penguin Swimming Team is based in Youngstown and practices at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Natatorium from early September to mid-August.

The team will host an informational meeting Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Chester Long Pavilion in Boardman Park and offer a one-month trial for $25 to swimmers who want to learn to swim or extend their summer swimming.
