Mahoning County residents can clean out their old electronics during a collection at the Boardman Township Road Department today.

The event is a partnership between the Green Team and the township, said Mari Wren Petrony, Green Team assistant director. The collection begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until noon at the township building, 8299 Market St.

“Most of the time, the technology change is so rapid that people are upgrading, and that’s why most people are getting rid of [electronics],” Petrony said.

Residents can drop off computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, DVD and VCR units, keyboards, stereos and table-top copier and fax machines, said Larry Wilson, Boardman road superintendent.

Fees will apply for computer monitors ($5) and televisions ($5 to $25, depending on size), he said.

Many electronics contain lead, mercury, cadmium and flame retardants, Petrony said.

“There’s a lot of hazardous materials in electronics, and if people do throw them away, those materials can leach into our environment,” she said.

This is the second time Boardman Township has had a collection, Wilson said, adding that the first filled three tractor-trailers.

Those unable to attend the drive can visit www.GreenTeam.cc and click on “Residential: Recycling Catalog” for a list of private entities that take electronics on an ongoing basis, or call the Green Team at 330-740-2060.
