It’s almost football season. Not only are the area football teams hitting the turf for training, but the cheerleaders have been practicing as well.

Cardinal Mooney cheerleaders took a break from their regular practice schedule to encourage nearly 100 cheerleaders from area parochial schools in grades five through eight.

Cardinal Mooney’s cheerleaders hosted their annual three-day cheer camp at the St. Charles School gymnasium Aug. 3 through the 5.

The Cardinal Mooney junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders served as “big sisters” to the seventh and eighth-grade cheerleaders, while the Mooney freshman squad assisted with fifth and sixth-graders.

They combined cheerleading skills with games and music to teach sideline cheers, jumps and a halftime dance routine. The camp concluded with an eighth-grade “all-star” competition and lunch together, followed by exhibition performances by each school’s squad for the parents to attend.

The three-day camp proved to be an enjoyable experience for all involved as the high school cheerleaders got to be mentors to the up-and-coming cheerleaders who look up to them.
