Little Cards top Newton Falls

The Canfield Little Cardinals 100 and 120-pound football teams opened their seasons Sunday with decisive wins over the Newton Falls Little Tigers at Bob Dove Field.

The 100-pounders earned a 26-14 victory, while the 120-pound squad won 38-0.

Both teams will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Boardman to face the Little Spartans.

100-pounders

The Cards scored three offensive touchdowns and one on defense to dominate the visitors.

Andre Crump did most of the damage, scoring all four touchdowns. He finished with 148 yards on just four carries, plus a 40-yard fumble recovery for a score.

Canfield scored the game’s first three touchdowns to build a 20-0 advantage. Krump put the Cards on the board early with a 40-yard TD run, set up by a 15-yard pass play from Jake Kowal to Ethan Fletcher. A pass from Kowal to Santino Marucci for a two-point conversion gave Canfield an 8-0 lead.

The defense stepped up on Newton Falls’ second possession. Marucci caused a Tiger fumble that was recovered by Crump and advanced for a 40-yard touchdown.

Two possessions later, Fletcher found daylight for 18 yards and a first down. Crump’s 17-yard score gave the Cards a 20-0 cushion.

After Marucci forced his second fumble, Crump coasted 88 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game and a 26-0 lead. Newton Falls closed the gap to 26-14 with two late touchdowns.

Defensively, Canfield was led by Marucci’s three forced fumbles, nine tackles and one fumble recovery. Fletcher added seven tackles, David Noday registered four tackles and Nathan Fiorenza had three.

120-pounders

The Canfield Little Cardinals 120-pound team opened the 2010 regular season with a 38-0 victory over the Newton Falls Little Tigers Sunday.

Vinnie Fioenza scored two touchdowns, including a 51-yarder on the Cards opening possession to lead the offense. In all, four different players found the end zone, including Carter Myers (1-yard TD), Luigi Rohrbaugh (20-yard score) and Nick Crawford (45-yard run).

Canfield scored three times in the first half to build a 23-0 advantage.

The Cards completed three two-point conversion attempts in the opening half. Paul French completed a conversion pass to Glenn Griswald to give Canfield an 8-0 lead and had another conversion toss to Victor Labra for a 16-0 advantage.

The other two-point conversions came via a pass from Michael Johns to Rohrbaugh and a run by Jake Whittenberger.

Myers and Anthony Carano each registered quarterback sacks and Paul Brienz and Dominic Velasquez each intercepted passes to pace the Cards’ defense, who scored its second straight shutout.
