Austintown Colts begin season with wins over Beaver Local

The Austintown Colts won two of the three games against the Beaver Local Little Beavers Saturday to successfully open the 2010 regular season.

The 100-pound team claimed a 13-6 victory and the 140-pounders earned a tough 6-0 win. The 120-pound team lost a 12-6 decision.

The Colts will host Girard tomorrow at 1 p.m.

100-pounders

Carl Farina rushed for 95 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown to lead the offense. Brian Ferguson gained 85 yards, scored on a short run and also added an extra point.The defense held the Little Beavers in check, allowing just one touchdown.

120-pounders

With temperatures in the low 90s, the Colts battled the Beavers on their home field. The game was competitive throughout, but Beaver Local was able to take control by recovering several fumbles.

Timmy King got the Colts on the scoreboard with a 35-yard touchdown run.

140-pounders

Defense dominated this contest, with just one touchdown allowed. After a scoreless first quarter, the Colts scored the only TD of the game.

A 17-yard run by JC Mikovich got things rolling for the Austintown offense. On the next play, Sam Anderson followed his blockers around right end for a 36-yard score, giving the Colts a 6-0 advantage.The Little Beavers nearly tied the game at the start of the fourth quarter, driving to the Colts’ 5. But the Austintown defense stiffened and preserved the shutout victory.
