The Mahoning County commissioners awarded sanitary-sewer and water-supply installation con- tracts for service to the $70 million Patriot Special Metals mill under construction on South Bailey Road in North Jackson.

On Thursday, the commissioners awarded the $182,608 sewer contract and the $52,272 waterline contract to Dave Sugar Excavating Inc. of Petersburg.

Excavation for the sewer-line installation is to begin Monday.

The water- and sewer-service extensions should be in service within 30 days, said J. Robert Lyden, acting county sanitary engineer.

The waterline extension will be about 1,200 feet long, and the sewer extension will be about 2,000 feet long.

The mill, which will produce specialty metals for many industries, including the nuclear and aerospace industries, will begin production next month.

The mill will have 50 to 60 employees when it is fully operational, and it is hiring, said Tom Presby, business-development manager for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber. Job applicants should go to the Boardman Plaza One-Stop office, he said.

The commissioners also approved a $24,500 traffic-engineering safety study to be performed by DLZ Ohio Inc. of Cleveland.

Among the intersections to be studied are South Avenue and McClurg Road in Boardman and Mahoning Avenue and Lipkey Road in North Jackson.

Such studies evaluate the need for traffic signals, turning lanes or other safety improvements, said Marilyn Kenner, chief deputy county engineer.

The commissioners also voted to apply for federal money for the improvement of Mahoning Avenue between the railroad track in Jackson Township and the Portage County line.

That $2 million project would be 80 percent federally funded, with a 20 percent local share, and Kenner said she hopes the work can begin early next year.

The work entails removal and replacement of 21/2 inches of asphalt paving, together with installation of new road signs and pavement markings.
