Police seek suspect in robbery of bar

Police are looking for the man responsible for robbing a South Side bar at gunpoint.

According to police, the man walked into Teenie’s Tavern on South Avenue just before 11 p.m. Monday, pointed a handgun at an employee and demanded cash. The man ultimately fired two shots into the floor, jumped over the counter and took an unspecified amount of cash.

Witnesses said the man fired about five shots into the air as he ran from the business and jumped into a waiting car with another person driving. Police in the vicinity heard the shots and responded to the area, but were unable to find the car.

Teams of attorneys to play softball

The Mahoning County Bar Association, in conjunction with the Daily Legal News, is hosting a softball game headlining the older lawyers versus the younger lawyers, titled “Grumps v. Chumps,” to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

The game will be played in Mill Creek Park’s Wick Recreation Area (Rocky Ridge) at 5:30 p.m. today. There is no admission fee for the game, but those attending and the players are being asked to bring donations of nonperishable food items.

Donations will be sought from the spectators and players, and there will be a raffle. There are also a number of drop off sites in the area including the Mahoning County Courthouse Clerk of Courts office, all of Mahoning County Area Courts and the bar association office, 114 E. Front St.

Probe of store robbery continues

Police continue their investigation into the weekend armed robbery of a Youngstown-Poland Road convenience store.

Authorities are questioning a man but had made no arrests as of Wednesday.

According to police reports, two male employees of the Sami Quick Stop, 5188 Youngstown-Poland Road, told police that around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, a man in his mid-20s with a knife and wearing a ski mask entered the back of the store before confronting the workers in an office, demanding they place their cell phones on a desk and forcing them into a restroom.

The employees escaped while the robber was still in the store and ran to a business across the street to call police.

The robber was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds, wearing a black, long-sleeved shirt, black gloves and boots and a dark pair of cargo pants. He got away with an undisclosed amount of money, the report says.

Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk said Danijela Senk, 82, of the 900 block of Lawrence Avenue, died of multiple blunt traumatic injuries in a car accident at 5 p.m. Monday as she was traveling south on Lawrence. She crashed into the porch of residence at 233 E. Prospect St.

Dr. Germaniuk said the accident was caused by some underlying incapacitating event suffered by Senk, but he had not yet discovered what it was.
