The Girard Lions Club is offering free eye screenings between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at the Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Hill.

Scholarships awarded

FARRELL/GREENVILLE, PA.

The UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Trustees recently awarded scholarships to medical students from Mercer, Lawrence, and Crawford counties.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by the UPMC Horizon medical staff.

Scholarship recipients are: Erin Horning, second-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Luke Johnson, second-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Lauren Kremm, a second-year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; Brian M. Lamb, a third-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, Pa.; Andrew Leuenberger, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Jennifer Montgomery, a third-year medical student at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa.; Zachary D. Zuschlag, a third-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Annual UPMC Horizon medical staff scholarships are open to medical students from the areas served by UPMC Horizon. Specific eligibility criteria and applications can be obtained by contacting the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Services office at 724-589-6224.

Zumba classes

YOUNGSTOWN

The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering Zumba dance classes for people of all ages and fitness levels.

The class integrates the Zumba Fitness formula and philosophy into traditional aqua fitness disciplines. The classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Session 1 is Aug. 31-Sept. 28; Session 2 is Oct. 5-28; Session 3 is Nov. 2-30, and Session 4 is Dec. 7-30.

For members, the cost for one session is $30; for two, $54; for three, $75, and for four, $90. For non-members, the costs are $40, $72, $100 and $120.

Pet first aid

American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering Dog and Cat First Aid on Friday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at its main office at 661 Mahoning Ave. NW.

The YWCA Discovery Place West preschool and before-and- after-school program free registration ends Friday.

Scholarships and financial aid are available to those who qualify for the program, which runs from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

YWCA Child Care is state licensed and contracted with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The preschool program serves age 21/2 to 5. YWCA Discovery Place West, serving age 6 to 12 years, has two locations: Mahoning United Methodist Church, 2214 Mahoning Ave., and William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School (formerly West), 310 S. Schenley Ave.

Quality achievement

FARRELL/GREENVILLE, Pa.

UPMC Horizon recently attained the maximum achievement level for fiscal year 2010 through the Highmark QualityBLUE Program, a pay-for-performance program that measures quality outcomes in hospitals.

Highmark specifically commended UPMC Horizon in the following areas: Implementation of procedures to reduce the number of patients leaving the Emergency Department; decreasing Caesarean surgical site infections during the program year; providing venous thromboembolism prophylaxis on high-risk medical units, and implementing procedures to effectively educate patients discharged on Warfarin to improve care transitions at greater than 90 percent for the final quarter of the program year.
