Attorney General Richard Cordray will be guest speaker at the Trumbull County Democratic Party annual picnic starting at 4:30 p.m. today at Maffitt’s Meadows on Bazetta Road. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the event — a $15 donation is requested per ticket.

SCOPE Senior Center, 220 W. Market St., will have a celebration for the 75th birthday of Social Security from 10 a.m. to noon today at the center. The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Aug. 14, 1935.

Guests include U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and Mayor Michael O’Brien. Representatives from Social Security and health-care advocates also will attend. Cake and coffee will be served.

Library levy fundraiser at original Handel’s

Youngstown

The Citizens Committee for the Library Levy is having a “Spirit Day” at Handel’s Ice Cream from 3 to 9 p.m. today.

All customers who bring a committee flier will have 20 percent of their purchase donated to the committee.

The proceeds will help fund awareness efforts of the library levy campaign. This fundraiser is only at the original Handel’s location, 3931 Handel’s Court on the corner of Market Street and Midlothian Boulevard. Fliers can be printed from www.libraryvisit.org.

Fugitive arrested

Police charged Carl T. Fisher, 29, of the 200 block of South Main Street in Austintown, with carrying a concealed weapon and petty theft after an incident around 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wal-Mart in Liberty Plaza on Belmont Avenue. Police said store security saw Fisher remove security wires from cameras, and put the cameras in the purse of his 24-year-old female companion. When Fisher was stopped and searched, two razor knives were found in the pocket of his shorts. Fisher also is wanted on an fugitive warrant in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman. He was taken to Trumbull County Jail pending arraignment.
