Suburban Dallas gunman licensed in law enforcement

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Records show that a security guard who killed himself during a shootout with suburban Dallas police after pulling into a police station parking lot with a trailer loaded with explosives was certified to work in law enforcement.

Patrick Gray Sharp of Anna was licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety to work as a security guard in 2004. Three years earlier, he was licensed as a jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Police in McKinney are investigating why Sharp on Tuesday started the exchange of gunfire that led to his death. Nobody else was hurt.

The Collin County Medical Examiner on Wednesday said Sharp died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
