Trash meetings

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Township trustees will have two informational meetings for township residents about a proposed contract with a single garbage hauler, which also would provide curbside recycling.

The first will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the township administration building, and the second will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the McKinley Heights Fire Station.

Chairman Steve Gerberry said trustees accepted bids from three companies at their meeting earlier this month and plan the meetings for the public to ask questions and learn more about the contract.

Gerberry said he anticipates a vote on hiring a trash hauler to come at the trustees’ regular meeting Sept. 14.

Several garbage pickup companies now provide service in the township, picking up on various days for the estimated 9,000 township residents.

Out of the Darkness

YOUNGSTOWN

An Out of the Darkness Community Walk set for Oct. 9 supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by helping to provide local and national suicide-prevention and awareness programs.

The Mahoning Valley community walk will begin at 9 a.m. in Mill Creek Park and end at noon. Walkers may register for the event through the AFSP’s website, www.outofthedarkness.org.

The walk will be one of nearly 220 community events taking place nationwide from the fall through December. The walks are expected to attract more than 60,000 walkers nationally and raise nearly $4 million for suicide- prevention efforts.

Brenda Haines, local walk organizer, said the Youngstown-area event should raise about $10,000 to fund research and prevention programs in the Valley.
